Raids in Siem Reap Net Thirty Drug Users

A joint force of police, military police and judicial officials arrested 30 drug users in a series of busts in Siem Reap province last week, the provincial governor said Wednesday.

Authorities raided two well-known drug havens in Siem Reap City and Sotr Nikum district from Wednesday to Friday, according to provincial Governor Khim Bunsong, who is also a military general.

Nineteen people were arrested in Siem Reap City’s Sala Kamroeuk commune and 11 were apprehended in Sotr Nikum’s Damdek commune.

Only 5 grams of methamphetamine were seized in the raids, but the governor said the operation was a success, nevertheless.

“When people, especially young people, use the drugs, they act without fear,” Brigadier General Bunsong said.

“In particular, they have had a very negative impact on tourism in this province.”

The governor added that a number of mobile phones and motorbikes were also confiscated. Samrith Sokhon, deputy prosecutor at the Siem Reap Provincial Court, said the 30 suspected drug users were being detained at the provincial prison.
