Pursat Police Destroy 450 Cannabis Plants

Police in Pursat province on Wednesday arrested a 35-year-old marijuana grower and destroyed 450 cannabis plants during a raid of a farm in Veal Veng district.

The bust followed a two-week investigation into the farmer’s illegal operation, district police chief Theng Leng said Thursday, adding that 12 kg of dried marijuana was also destroyed.

“At first we couldn’t find the owner, but then we caught him when he came to cut the fresh marijuana,” Mr. Leng said, adding that in his two years as police chief, his officers have never confiscated so much marijuana in a single operation.

“The marijuana grower confessed that he grew the marijuana for sale in Phnom Penh,” he said.

Mr. Leng said all of the marijuana, worth about $100 per kg, was destroyed on the spot.

The farmer, Sor Rithy, is currently being held at the district police station, and would be sent to the provincial court for questioning today, he said.

In August, military police razed two mountaintop marijuana farms in Kampot province’s Toek Chhou district, destroying more than 500 plants in total.
