A 43-year-old man was arrested Monday in connection with the gang rape and murder of a maid in Pursat province’s Phnom Kravanh district on Saturday, police officials said Tuesday.
Samraong commune police chief Soum Ran said the suspect, Suos Samnang, is currently being detained at the district police station.
“He initially declined to answer questions, but later…told police that he and Bun Sam Ath, 53, raped the victim together and then strangled her to death,” Mr. Ran said.
He added that Mr. Sam Ath—the suspect’s neighbor and victim’s employer—escaped when police arrived to make the arrests and is now on the run.
A total of four men were originally detained for questioning in the wake of the murder.
The body of the victim, 34-year-old Phon Sophy, was found in a wooded area about 200 meters from her employer’s home, Mr. Ran said.
“Police will send Mr. Samnang to Pursat Provincial Court on Thursday,” he said.
