Provincial Officials to Investigate Burned CNRP Sign

Oddar Meanchey provincial police chief Men Ly said on Sunday he will launch an investigation into the burning of an opposition CNRP sign during a protest in Samraong City on Friday led by a defector to the ruling CPP.

“We received the complaint yesterday, and we will investigate this case,” Mr. Ly said, declining to comment further.

Kinh Vannak, a CNRP member of the provincial council, said he lodged a complaint hoping to force Kem Kosal, the defected former CNRP member, to pay for the damage he encouraged about 15 protesters to carry out.

“We demand authorities punish the perpetrators following the law, and pay for the destruction of the party sign and some compensation,” he said.

Samraong City police chief So San said he had rejected an earlier complaint that Mr. Vannak tried to submit to him because the case was political.

“The CNRP’s activists, because of the hopelessness of their leader and deputy leader, are hopeless,” he said. “And we do not want to take this [complaint] because it is a party issue, and politics.”
