Prince Honored for Steps Toward Democracy Steps

Prince Norodom Ranariddh Thursday received a medal from French-speaking countries, honoring his contributions to Cambodia’s political and economic stability. Pierre DeBane, chairman of the Commission of the Parliament of the Francophony, bestowed upon the prince a medal conveying his rank as “Grand Officer de l’Ordre de la Pleaide.”

The rank was for his contributions to “the improvement of democracy and the rule of law in his country,” DeBane said. The rank is the second highest honor granted by the Pleaide, a multinational cultural organization with members from French-speaking countries, according to a National Assembly statement.

The prince said he was “pleased for this high rank of the Francophony.” There are 150 grand officers in the organization, which has 1,200 members, according to the statement.
