Prek Chak Military Police Officer Shoots Himself

A military police officer from Kampot province shot and killed himself early Monday morning while drunkenly playing with a pistol, an official said.

Ham Hiep, 35, was at a guesthouse in Chroy Changva district’s Prek Leap commune with his girlfriend when at 1:20 a.m. he fired the gun into his head and died instantly, according to Khat Sok, deputy chief of Prek Chak International Checkpoint in Kampot.

Mr. Sok said Ham Hiep commonly played Russian roulette with his pistol when he was drunk.

“He would put a blank in the chamber and fire the gun against his head in order to show his colleagues at the police station his power,” he said.

Ham Hiep’s girlfriend, who was the only witness to the suicide, said he had been complaining about a family crisis and work in the moments leading up to his death.

According to a police report in the case, Ham Hiep was the captain of the military police station at the Prek Chak International Checkpoint and had two children who lived with him in Lork commune, Kompong Trach district.
