Preah Vihear Villagers Continue to Protest

More than 30 families continued to demonstrate in Preah Vihear province’s Chheb district on Friday and Saturday over what they say is the illegal clearing of land by a Chinese company, villagers said Sunday.

The families accuse Rui Feng (Cambodia) International of clearing 500 hectares of land they have occupied for almost three years to establish a sugarcane plantation.

“We were threatened by the company that if we are still protesting to demand our land they will file a complaint,” said Duong Sokhem, a representative of the villagers, who said the villagers decided to protest anyway.

On Sunday, more than 300 families from M’Lou Prey I, M’lou Prey II and Sangke II communes collected thumbprints as part of a complaint they will file against the company with rights group Adhoc. Ung Vuthy, Chheb district governor, said the land was given to Rui Feng (Cambodia) International as an economic land concession.
