Port Bidding Process To Begin

Applications will be accepted beginning Tuesday for a huge container project located on six hectares at Sihanoukville Port.

Project director Ma Sun Hout said the port has received a $38 million loan from the Japanese government for the new compound, which will be able to handle thousands of ship containers. The winning bidder will be required to put up an as yet undetermined deposit of between $10 million and $50 million before starting work.

“We will provide a fair and just [system] for international construction companies to bid,” Ma Sun Hout said. Cambodian companies are not being invited to bid because the government wants a larger construction company with more assets.

The winning bidder will be paid  on a step-by-step basis as construction is completed.

Sin Khandy, chief of cabinet for the Ministry of Public Works, said encouraging an increase in container space is good planning for the future.

“I think the economy will speed up,” Sin Khandy said. “And Sihanoukville will be able to compete with other international ports in the region.”

The deadline for bidders to apply is Feb 6.
