Cambodian pop singer Vann Makara was killed on Saturday evening after he was involved in a car crash in Sihanoukville and an ambulance carrying him to Phnom Penh for treatment crashed along the way, police said on Sunday.
Say Bunthan, the police chief of Phnom Sruoch district in Kompong Speu province, where the fatal ambulance accident occurred, said the vehicle’s tire blew out, leading the driver to lose control.
“The ambulance was carrying five people including Vann Makara and its tire exploded, which caused the vehicle to overturn,” he said, adding that the ambulance driver then fled the scene.
The other passengers in the ambulance suffered only minor injuries, but Vann Makara was killed, he added.
He said he was uncertain of where the initial accident had occurred, but local news website VOD Hot News yesterday placed it in Preah Sihanouk province’s Prey Nop district.
