Police on Tuesday seized a cache of 14 tons of rosewood hidden inside a fake Sokimex gasoline tanker truck driving through Oddar Meanchey province.
The truck was headed to Siem Reap province when it was stopped by commune police, who said they had noticed it driving through the province before.
“It is rosewood. It was put into a petrol tanker that can hold 24,000 liters of oil and has 16 wheels and a Phnom Penh plate,” said Ouch Mao, the chief of police in Samraong city’s Samraong commune.
“We chased that truck before, but we could not catch it.”
Mr. Mao said that although the truck bore Sokimex’s logo, it was not used to carry gasoline.
Despite the fact that police managed to stop the truck and confront its driver and a passenger sitting in the front seat, Mr. Mao claimed that it was impossible to arrest the two men before they escaped by running into the forest.
“We could not arrest the driver and the driver’s assistant,” he said.
