Police Seize Nearly Two Tons of Marijuana in Phnom Penh

Police seized nearly 2 tons of marijuana in Phnom Penh on Friday evening and later arrested four suspected drug dealers, according to police.

Khieu Saman, director of the Interior Ministry’s anti-drug trafficking department who ordered the raid, said that more than 1 ton of dried marijuana, along with processing and packaging equipment, was taken from a house in Russei Keo district’s Tuol Sangke commune. However, according to a statement posted to the National Police website over the weekend, 1,987 kg of marijuana was confiscated in the operation.

Lieutenant General Saman said that the alleged dealers—who he declined to name because the investigation into the drug ring was ongoing—were arrested in separate locations across Phnom Penh on Friday night and Saturday morning.

“We have been collecting information for a long time, and we got information from outside and inside the country, using local experts and local authorities’ investigations to help before we arrested the men,” he said, adding that local police, municipal court officials and authorities from other countries also cooperated in the bust.

“It is an international smuggling ring, and the drugs and marijuana come from the Golden Triangle area through Laos and into our country. And from here, they are sold on to another country,” he said.

Lt. Gen. Saman said that the four suspects and the marijuana were being held at his department’s headquarters, and would be sent to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court when his officials complete their report on the case.

“We will send the marijuana, equipment and suspects to the court to face legal action,” he said.

Seang Sok, a deputy prosecutor at the municipal court who participated in the raid, confirmed that the drugs were seized on Friday night and said police were seeking other suspects. “We are still working on the case, and we’re looking for other people who are involved,” he said.
