Police Seeking Angkor Park Officer in Shooting

Authorities are searching for a police officer stationed at the Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap province as the prime suspect in the fatal shooting of his friend early on Monday morning.

Sour Kimsan, 35, a heritage police officer, had been drinking with the victim and three others on Sunday night at his post across the road from the popular Preah Khan temple, said Toch Bunthoeun, the Angkor Thom district police chief.

The pair continued drinking late into the night, after the other three left, said deputy provincial police chief Thong Sakun, adding that witnesses told police the men had argued early in the evening, but eventually calmed down.

At 3:38 a.m., in circumstances unknown, Chea Phearun, 28, was fatally shot with an AK-47, Mr. Bunthoeun said.

Mr. Kimsan fled the scene and authorities are searching for him, he added.

“They were close friends. We don’t know what happened before the victim was shot.” Mr. Sakun said police believed a second fight precipitated the murder.

He said extra officers have been stationed along the border in Banteay Meanchey province to prevent Mr. Kimsan from trying to flee to Thailand.
