Police Seek 2 EdC Officials in Electricity Scam

Police officials say they have submitted arrest warrant requests for two Electricite du Cambodge officials in connection with an electricity scam estimated to have cost the government hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Lek Vannak, municipal judicial police chief and Khuon Sophan, municipal penal police chief, said Monday they are seeking arrest warrants for Nu Sokhon, director of distribution at EdC, and Hun Monyroth, director of EdC’s electricity sub-stations. Neither could be reached for comment.

Lek Vannak said the requests were sent to the Municipal Court last Thursday following a statement by Chea Rithy alleging that the two officials were part of the scam and received monthly payments of between $5,000 and $10,000.

However, Municipal Court Chief Prosecutor Uk Savuth said Monday he has not yet received the arrest warrant requests. Chea Rithy, owner of the private electricity company by the same name, and two other members of his firm were arrested Feb 11 and Feb 12 for stealing state electricity and selling it to hotels, businesses and private residents in Phnom Penh.
