Police Searching for Acid Attack Suspect in Siem Reap

Police in Phnom Penh say they have called on their counterparts in Siem Reap province to join the search for the sole suspect in the year’s first acid attack, which was carried out last week in the capital’s Meanchey district.

Nget Phally, 27, is suspected of throwing acid on the face of his wife, Sum Sokny, 23, on the night of February 8, according to police, who said the two had separated prior to the attack.

Meanchey district police chief Teng Sino said he had asked Siem Reap provincial police and National Police to assist in the hunt for Mr. Phally.

“The suspect works in Siem Reap as a construction worker, so he might have fled to Siem Reap province,” he said, adding that district police had distributed a photo of Mr. Phally and were gathering more information on his possible location.

Deputy Siem Reap provincial police chief Thong Sokun said he had not received a photo of Mr. Phally, but that deputy Phnom Penh police chief Song Ly had led a team to the province to work with local police to track down the suspect.

Mr. Ly could not be reached.
