Police Searching for 7 Men in Alleged Gang Rape

Police in Kandal province arrested a 25-year-old man Monday and are searching for seven other men involved in the alleged gang rape of a 29-year-old woman in Sa’ang district Sunday.

Ra Marum was arrested in Raka Khpos commune for allegedly raping the victim Sunday evening, commune police Chief Lan Chantha said Tuesday.

“He confessed to the crime,” Lan Chantha said, adding that the suspect named the victim’s boyfriend as one of the men involved in the plan to gang rape the woman.

“Five men raped the victim, and another three just conspired in the case,” he said.

District police Chief Maing Pich said Tuesday that Ra Marum will be sent to the Kandal Provincial Court today.

On April 16, two 15-year-old girls were also gang raped in Sa’ang district by as many as nine men after attending a Khmer New Year dance party.

Police arrested Nhiek Ratha, 22, for his alleged involvement in the attack.

Maing Pich said Tuesday that no further arrests have been made in the first gang rape case.

Men Makara, an investigator for local rights group Adhoc, called on police in Sa’ang district to step up their efforts to protect women from such attacks.

“Sa’ang district has had two serious cases in which offenders raped as a group,” he said. “It should be stopped.”
