Police Officer Suspect In Murder of Uncle Over Land Divider

A police officer is being sought in connection with the murder of his uncle, a Ministry of Interior police sergeant, following a dispute over land on Saturday evening in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district, authorities said yesterday.

First lieutenant Sun Bory, 27, is suspected of shooting his uncle, Sou Bung, 41, to death after the younger man started an argument with his older relative about the location of a brick divider that separated their properties, Niroth commune police chief Hun Chan Thoeun said yesterday. The suspect was drinking with friends at the time of the killing, Mr Chan Thoeun said.

“The victim was shot once in the groin and died instantly. This was revenge stemming from a land dispute,” Mr Chan Thoeun said. “Now police are searching for the suspect who fled after committing this illegal act,” he said, adding that heavy drinking fueled the violent argument.

The victim’s wife, Suon Chamroeun, said she was told that her nephew and a few other men were drinking when the argument started on Saturday evening. The nephew took out his pistol and shot his uncle in the lap while he was still sitting down, she said.

“My husband has been mentally ill since 2009 because of a car accident and he has argued with [my nephew] about the divider before,” she said, branding her nephew a “brutal man.”
