Police Officer Punched During Traffic Stop in Poipet

A man was arrested Monday after assaulting a police officer conducting traffic in Banteay Meanchey province’s Poipet City amid the bustle of the Pchum Ben national holiday, officials said.

Soeng Chhy, 29, was arrested at about 3:30 p.m. after repeatedly punching Nimit commune police chief Mar Rin, who had stopped the man on his motorbike to allow another line of traffic to pass, said Um Sophal, Poipet City police chief.

“The man was angry and punched our police officer several times in the face,” he said. “We will not pardon the man because he dared to use violence against our police officer while he was working to ease traffic.”

The city police chief added that Mr. Chhy was in custody at the district police station and would be handed over to the provincial police today.

According to Sith Lash, deputy police chief of Banteay Meanchey, Mr. Chhy will be accused of causing intentional injury and preventing authorities from doing their work.
