Police Officer, Mechanic Wounded by Gunfire

A Kandal provincial police official and a motorbike repairman were found bleeding from serious gunshot wounds inside the repairman’s home in Phnom Penh on Monday afternoon, although it remained unclear who had fired the shots, police said.

After the sound of a gunshot was heard coming from the Meanchey district home of Uy Sanketya, 32, at around 1:30 p.m., Chak Angre Krom commune police entered the house to find Mr. Sanketya and Major El Haly, 44, lying on the ground.

Mr. Sanketya was bleeding profusely from his right hand and Maj. Haly, who is deputy chief of personnel for the Kandal provincial police, was badly wounded with a bullet lodged in his stomach, commune police chief Lor Ninno said.

Maj. Haly’s police-issued K-54 semi-automatic pistol was later found hidden inside the house, Mr. Ninno added.

The two men are both hospitalized in serious condition, and police are waiting to question them after their medical condition has stabilized, according to Kong Samon, penal police chief of Meanchey district.

“The reason for the shooting has not yet been revealed, because both of them are seriously injured and we cannot interview them,” Mr. Samon said.
