A police officer died and four of his family members remained in the hospital Tuesday after suffering suspected seizures at their home in Siem Reap City on Monday, according to police.
Deputy Siem Reap commune police chief Chum Chan Proeksa, 38, was found dead in his home by neighbors, while his wife, Chhoem Channy, 37, and their three children—aged between 9 and 16—were rushed to the hospital unconscious after apparently suffering seizures, according to provincial penal police chief Thorng Sokun.
“We got reports from other villagers that they were poisoned, but we do not know yet who did it, so we cannot say yet what caused it,” he said.
Mr. Sokun said the three children were recovering at Kantha Bopha children’s hospital in Siem Reap. Pen Phalkun, Siem Reap provincial referral hospital director, said Ms. Channy was in critical condition Tuesday, adding he believed food contaminated by pesticides was to blame.
Mr. Sokun said urine samples had been sent to Phnom Penh for testing.
