Police Detain Rainsy Party Supporters

Two Sam Rainsy Party workers distributing leaflets at a garment factory were detained by police Monday morning and later released, according to police.

Chhim Vanama, 26, and Beun Trida, 24, were handing out leaflets at the Zheng Yong Garment factory in Russei Keo district to promote a party demonstration planned for Sunday.

The pair were detained “for security reasons,” district police Chief Tim Prosar said. He said he was acting on a complaint from the factory owner.

The two activists said security guards at the factory pointed guns at them and forced them into the factory.

Guards later denied they had pointed their guns and said the pair were brought into the factory “so they could ask them for information.” The activists were released later in the afternoon.
