Police Continue To Hunt for Infamous Kidnapping Head

Municipal officials said Thursday they have no proof that notorious kidnap mastermind Sam Nara, also known as “Rasmach,” is being protected by a high-ranking official and reiterated that the gang boss will be arrested.

Phnom Penh Governor Chea Sophara said Thursday a citywide search is under way for Sam Nara and two remaining members of his gang who are believed to be hiding in Phnom Penh.

Information is circulating that Sam Nara is hiding in the home of a high-ranking official but the information could not be confirmed, Chea Sophara said.

A Ministry of Interior official, who did not want to be identified, claimed Thursday that Sam Nara’s continued freedom, despite a massive manhunt, is a clear sign that he is being protected.

The official also said the kidnapper may be in danger from his one-time supporters who want him silenced rather than arrested. A total of 13 members of the highly successful kidnapping gang have been arrested in the past week in Pursat province and Phnom Penh.
