Municipal police arrested more than 50 people for playing with firecrackers during last week’s Chinese New Year celebration, police said Sunday.
Some offenders were fined, although police did not say how much the fines were.
In Tuol Kok district, police said they called parents of young offenders to tell the families about their responsibility to supervise their children. “We called the parents to ensure that their children do not play with firecrackers again,” said Khem Run, the Tuol Kok district police chief.
The municipality of Phnom Penh has banned the sale or use of firecrackers in the city for several years because of the damage they can inflict to both people and homes, police said.
Chamkar Mon district police detained 14 people, Don Penh fined eight, Meanchey arrested nine, Prampi Makara detained seven and Russei Keo district arrested eight, authorities said.
Lighting firecrackers are traditionally a part of welcoming in the Chinese New Year and an annual target of the municipality, though few heed the ban.
