Police Arrest 37 in Meth Sweep in Trapaing Chhouk

Police arrested 36 men and one woman on Saturday in the latest raid on Phnom Penh’s Trapaing Chhouk slum, a cluster of shanties above a fetid pond in Sen Sok district where crystal methamphetamine use and distribution are rampant.

Sen Sok district police chief Mak Hong said his forces moved in on the village at about 3 p.m. and arrested 37 people, also confiscating 12 gaming machines and small amounts of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

“We conducted an operation and arrested 37 people, including a woman, and confiscated some drugs and drug-use equipment,” Mr. Hong said.

All of the mostly young suspects were still being detained yesterday for questioning at the Sen Sok district police headquarters, he said, adding that they would soon be sent to court.

“We tested their urine and found all of them tested positive for drugs except three people,” he said.

Last month, police arrested 62 people in a raid on Trapaing Chhouk, after arresting 88 people in a similar operation in August.
