Cambodia’s weather hit unseasonably low temperatures in recent days because of a monsoon from the north, officials said.
Im Sophanna, deputy director of the weather observation office at the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, said Sunday that temperatures dropped to 22 degrees Celsius on Saturday and to 18.9 degrees on Sunday. The weather will be about 20 degrees today, according to Im Sophanna.
Some provinces, like Siem Reap and Kompong Thom, could see temperatures drop to 17 degrees.
Temperatures generally reach the mid-30s at this time of year.
Crops, however, will not be affected by the cold spell because it is only expected to last a few days, Im Sophanna said.
A former meteorologist said that it was normal for a cold spell to hit in mid-February but that this year’s chill was later than usual.
Chan Tong Yves, secretary of state for the Agriculture Ministry, said the cold spell would be good for crops because it would likely eliminate some pests.
