Plans for New Phnom Penh Media Complex Revealed

Plans for a new state media complex in Phnom Penh that will digitize all television broadcasting by 2020 and bring world class coverage of the 2023 SEA Games were revealed Wednesday.

The Chinese-owned Power China Kunming Engineering Corporation will build the 60,000-square-meter complex near the planned Morodok Techo stadium in Chroy Changva district, which will host the 2023 SEA Games, according to Ouk Kimseng, an undersecretary of state at the Information Ministry.

Mr. Kimseng said Information Minister Khieu Kanharith and a representative of the company had signed off on the project through a memorandum of understanding.

“All the broadcasting channels under the Information Ministry’s control will be moved and centralized to the broadcasting complex,” he said, adding that the construction schedule is in line with Asean’s target for all countries to switch from analog to digital by 2020.

The complex will include a 285-meter TV tower, a media center, a press center, information offices, cultural auditoriums and TV studios, Mr. Kimseng said, adding that he did not know when construction would begin.
