Pier Said to be Within Border

Koh Kong Governor Rong Plamkesan this week denied a report in a Thai newspaper that a proposed pier would extend across the Thai border.

The Bangkok Post reported Sunday that a pier being built by Thai businessman Pat Supapa for visitors at the international casino in Koh Kong, crosses over the Thai side of the border. The pier also would receive cargo vessels traveling between Cambodia and Thailand.

The discovery, according to the report, was made by a Thai government adviser, Admiral Thanom Charoensara. Thai Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Saroj Chavanarat was cited as saying the Cambodian embassy in Bangkok would be notified of the problem.

But Rong Plamkesan said the Thais already have been consulted about the 500-meter pier. Although the pier’s foundation will extend slightly across the border, he said, the pier itself will not and both sides are satisfied with the plans.

“I think the problem has already been solved and construction can start now,” the governor said.

The $250,000 project is expected to take two years to complete, Rong Plamkesan added.
