Phnom Penh Municipality Plans City Expansion

Authorities are planning to further enlarge Phnom Penh by incorporating another chunk of Kandal province’s Lvea Em district into the municipality, a City Hall spokesman said Friday.

The municipality has its eye on Akrei Khsat commune and surrounding areas, which is located across the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers from the Royal Palace, for development purposes, said Long Dimanche.

“We have a plan to include that area in our urban zone because we want to enlarge Phnom Penh city as there are more and more people coming in,” he said. “That area is very close to the city and also in front of the Royal Palace and should be more developed.”

Kandal provincial governor Mao Phirun said he did not think the area needed to be incorporated into the capital for development to go ahead.

“If the government wants to develop that area, I think it is not necessary to include that area into the city because we just need to have a master plan that includes development of infrastructure like bridges and roads.”
