Phnom Penh Court Questions Bus Drivers Over Protest

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Monday questioned two former bus drivers from the Phnom Penh Sorya Transportation company over complaints filed by the company claiming that the men, who have been fired, intimidated staff and defamed the firm during a strike for a higher wage last month.

Yim Kuyba and Phon Visal were questioned by deputy prosecutor Seu Vanny, according to Choem Khieng, a legal officer at the Cambodian Labor Confederation who is representing the drivers.

The pair spearheaded a strike by about 20 fellow Sorya bus drivers, beginning in early April, in which the drivers at one point took the keys to buses and for days protested in front of its station near Central Market.

Mr. Kuyba said that he and Mr. Visal were presented with little evidence apart from the complaint by Sorya’s general manager outlining his allegations.

“The court did not decide to charge us with those accusations yet because they did not have any proof,” he said.

Representatives of the company and Ms. Vanny, the deputy prosecutor, could not be reached for comment.
