A bus operated by Paramount Angkor Express ran off the road in Kompong Chhnang province on Saturday morning, killing a woman and her 9-year-old grandson who were shopping at a roadside grocery store, a local police official said on Sunday.
Deputy provincial police chief Luch Vanara said the driver of the bus, which had been traveling from Battambang City to Phnom Penh via National Road 5, lost control of the vehicle after hitting a taxi that had been turning into a gas station in Rolea Ba’ier district’s Chrey Bakk commune at about 10:45 a.m.
The driver fled the scene and remains at large, he said.
“After crashing into the taxi, the bus swerved to the right and crashed into the grocery store, killing the woman and seriously injuring the boy,” Mr. Vanara said, adding that the boy died on the way to the provincial referral hospital about an hour later.
He added that the woman, Koy Sophat, 54, was crushed under one of the bus’ tires while her grandson Yin Sotharayuth was hit by the front of the vehicle and succumbed to multiple injuries, including major head trauma.
Paramount Angkor Express could not be reached for comment on Sunday.
