Two men were arrested on Sunday after they were caught attempting to smuggle 3.7 kg of marijuana into Vietnam through a local border checkpoint in Takeo province’s Kiri Vong district, officials said on Monday.
In Song, deputy chief of the Interior Ministry’s anti-drug department, said An Dalin, 21, and Ei Tang Ny, 35, were detained at the Kamnop border checkpoint at around 10 a.m. while attempting to smuggle the drug in a bamboo basket attached to a moto.
“We arrested two men as they carried goods across the border with 3.7 kg of dried marijuana hidden inside,” Mr. Song said.
Upon arrest, the pair claimed they were transporting the marijuana for a Vietnamese businessman whose identity they did not know, provincial anti-drug police chief Chak Sonn said.
Police in Kiri Vong district are now working with Vietnamese border police in an attempt to track down the pair’s alleged co-conspirator, while the two suspects were questioned by the provincial court on Monday, he added.
