Opposition Leaders Leave for Europe Trip

Opposition leaders Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha will meet with CNRP supporters in Paris on Saturday, opening a two-week trip to Europe to meet with expatriate supporters of the party and fundraise, opposition spokesman Yim Sovann said Friday.

Mr. Rainsy and Mr. Sokha traveled regularly to Europe and the U.S. to raise funds in the chaotic aftermath of the July 2013 national election but have left Cambodia less frequently since the opposition joined the National Assembly in August.

Mr. Sovann said the pair left for France separately but would meet in Paris.

“Sam Rainsy left since the 20th [of December] and Kem Sokha left yesterday, and there will be a public meeting in Paris on the 27th,” he said. “It is to meet the constituency there and also for fundraising,” Mr. Sovann said of the trip.

The opposition spokesman added that there is not yet a definite schedule for their return but that they should come back within two weeks.

“They are supposed to come back in the first week of next year,” Mr. Sovann said.
