Flooding in the northeast has killed one woman and affected almost 100,000 people, while fishermen in coastal areas are being warned of rough conditions at sea, officials said.
In Stung Treng province, the Mekong River has risen almost one meter above the emergency level of 11 meters, Stung Treng provincial chief of cabinet Ourn Bora said. More than 29,000 people have been affected by the flooding, he said.
In Prek Prasap district in Kratie province, a woman slipped and fell to her death inside her flooded house near the Mekong River, authorities say.
More than 70,000 people have been hurt by flash flooding in the province, Kratie provincial governor Loy Sophat said.
The Mekong River’s level reached 22.8 meters in Kratie town as of Monday, Loy Sophat said. This has put the province at risk for power outages, he added.
“I think this year’s flooding is worse than last year’s,” the provincial official said.
Meanwhile, two fishing boats sank in the Gulf of Thailand near Koh Kong province last week, Koh Kong province Governor Yuth Phouthang said.
The fishermen were rescued and other fishermen have since been warned by authorities and by radio weather reports of rainstorms and rough seas, he said.
Speedboats that normally run between Sihanoukville and Koh Kong have temporarily stopped because of high waves, the governor said.
“Some fishermen are taking the risk to go fishing, despite their awareness of the possible storm,” Yuth Phouthang said.
More than 700 families in Dang Keo village, Sre Ambel district, Koh Kong province suffered through a torrential rainstorm over the weekend, district chief Moeung Luonsa said.
In Kampot, provincial Governor Ly Sour said Kampot town was flooded by one-half meter of water on Sunday, but he said it had receded by Monday.
