One Killed, Four Injured in Severe Storms in B’bang

One woman died and three other people were seriously injured when strong winds and rain hit Battambang province on Monday, the day before a similar storm destroyed homes in Oddar Meanchey province, officials said Wednesday.

Tim Dareth, governor of Battambang’s Bavel district, said that 64-year-old Heng Soeun died during the storm that struck Ampil Pram Doeum commune Monday night, destroying 21 homes and damaging 19 others, as well as a Buddhist temple and a school.

“She died instantly at her house when a pillar collapsed and smashed her head, and three other villagers, including a 12-year-old girl, were seriously injured because they were not able to escape while the houses were falling down,” he said, adding that the girl was still receiving treatment at the district referral hospital.

Nov Samdararith, governor of Trapaing Prasat district in Oddar Meanchey, said a storm also struck Trapaing Prasat commune at about 8 p.m. on Tuesday, damaging nine homes and injuring one woman.

“Three families’ houses were completely destroyed and they remain there without proper shelter, so we are preparing a report to get donations from the Cambodian Red Cross,” he said.

Mr. Dareth said the aid organization was already assisting families in his district.
