One Dead, One Injured In Separate Mine Blasts

A man died after he stepped on a land mine Sunday in Banteay Meanchey province, officials said Monday.

Thma Puok district deputy police chief Chhuot Tha said Lun Keuy, 58, a farmer, died instantly after he stepped on a land mine while he was picking bamboo shoots with other villagers in Banteay Chhmar commune.

“The victim lost his right leg below the knee and was wounded all over his body and died instantly,” Mr. Tha said.

“We always educate people about the danger of land mines but they still enter forbidden areas. People always risk their lives to enter to this area to make a living.”

In a separate case, a woman was seriously injured after stepping on a landmine in Battambang province on Saturday while also searching for bamboo shoots. Sor Sreynich, 19, was on Dambang Veng Mountain in Banan district’s Ta Kream commune when the explosion took place.

“She knelt on her knees in order to dig bamboo shoots and her knee pressed on the mine,” commune chief Im Bun You said.
