One Dead, One Injured After Ambulance Crash

An ambulance crashed into a motorcycle in Phnom Penh on Tuesday night, killing one man and injuring another, police said Wednesday. San Pal, 19, died on the way to Calmette Hospital from the crash site in Russei Keo district, while his brother, San Chan, 18, is recovering at the hospital from a broken left leg, said Seng Chanthorn, deputy municipal traffic police chief.

“An ambulance driven by an unknown driver was carrying a patient from a private clinic in Siem Reap to a hospital in Phnom Penh,” Mr. Chanthorn said.

“The ambulance tried to overtake a car and crashed into the motorcycle.” Mr. Chanthorn added that the ambulance was traveling quickly without any sirens. “We are still investigating who the driver is and which hospital the ambulance belonged to, because the driver escaped after the crash” he said.

San Kimsan, the uncle of the two victims, said the pair were on their way home when the crash occurred.

“We have not gotten any compensation yet because police have not yet found the driver or the hospital responsible,” said Mr. Kimsan.
