A man was killed and his wife left unconscious after lightning struck their stilted home as they took shelter from a storm in Battambang province’s Mong Russei district on Thursday, a local official said on Friday.
As the storm lashed Kakoh commune and tore the roof off their home Thursday afternoon, Oun Koy, 34, and his wife Sa Thach, 37, took cover underneath their house, according to commune chief Pal Chom.
Oun Koy was killed immediately when a bolt of lightening struck the home, he said, while his wife, who was burned on the back and knocked unconscious, is being treated at the district referral hospital.
“It is a shame that Koy died from lightning because he is still young,” Mr. Chom said. “If it was an illness we could take care of him.”
The commune chief said that following the deadly storm—a cow was also killed—and with reports of further storms in the next few days, he would urge locals to be extra vigilant.
