One Arrested in Container Heist; Other Suspects Flee

One man was arrested early Friday morning for hijacking a truck headed to Sihanoukville Autonomous Port with a container full of garments for export, while an unknown number of other suspects in the heist are still being sought by police.

Sam Samean, military police chief of Kompong Seila district, said that on Thursday night, suspect Chork Sam Oeun, 32, along with around five accomplices, had pretended to be police officers, set up a checkpoint using two Toyota Camrys, and stopped truck driver Chon Socheat as he drove along National Road 4 in Preah Sihanouk province.

“When the container driver stopped the truck, the suspects caught the driver, threw him into their car, and drove the truck full of clothes about 5 km down a rural road,” followed by the two Camrys, Mr. Samean said.

Villagers along the rural road grew suspicious and alerted authorities to the presence of the container truck; however, when military police arrived on the scene, most of the suspects fled in the two Camrys, leaving Mr. Sam Oeun, who was driving the container truck, to take the rap, Mr. Samean added.
