Officials Tell Owner to Hire New Construction Firm

The owner of an under-construction condominium where three men died while riding an elevator were instructed by authorities to hire a new construction firm before recommencing work on the site, an official said Sunday.

Four men were on board the crude construction elevator at the 11-story building in Chamkar Mon district’s Tuol Tumpoung II commune on April 30 when its cable snapped, sending them plummeting four stories.

Officials from the Ministry of Land Management and municipal land management department met with building owner Ung Chunkeng on Thursday to discuss requirements for the construction site to reopen.

“The building owner has already canceled the contract with the old company,” said Bin Sochhy, deputy director of the land management department.

Mr. Sochhy said he did not know the name of the old company, adding that the new one must be licensed and registered with the ministry.

“I don’t know if the old company had a license or not,” he said.
