A police official and his wife were gunned down in broad daylight Tuesday morning on Phnom Penh’s busy Monireth Boulevard in what police believe was a contract killing.
Phan Sokha, a 38-year-old first lieutenant assigned to Chamkar Mon district police, was shot once in the forehead and his wife Bun Thol, a stall owner at O’Russei Market, was shot four times while traveling by motorcycle on Monireth Boulevard near the Olympic Stadium.
According the Kim Horn, Tuol Kok district police chief, the two were shot by two men on a motorcycle at about 10 am.
Municipal Penal Police Chief Khuon Sophon said Tuesday initial police investigations conclude the gunman was probably a hired killer settling a personal score for someone else. “The offenders were hired to do the killing…because [they] did not take anything from the victims after the shooting,” Khuon Sophon said.
