Nuon Chea Team To Pursue Graft Inquiry at Appeal Court

Following the recent abrupt dismissal of a Phnom Penh Municipal Court investigation into alleged kickbacks at the Khmer Rouge tribunal, international lawyers for Brother Number Two Nuon Chea on Thursday registered an appeal with the municipal court that seeks to bring the kickback matter before the Appeal Court.

Two days after announcing that he intended to call multiple witnesses, Deputy Phnom Penh Prosecutor Sok Kalyan on Feb 5 dismissed a preliminary investigation that was begun at the request of Nuon Chea’s international defense team. The sole witness in the short-lived investigation, tribunal Director of Administration Sean Visoth, only provided evidence about human resources management. Defense legal consultant Andrew Ianuzzi said Thursday that he had registered the defense’s appeal against the dismissal at the municipal court and that the case would soon be transferred to the Appeal Court. Sok Kalyan said he was too busy to talk to a reporter.
