North Koreans Jailed Over Gambling Ring

Fifteen North Korean nationals arrested Thursday for allegedly running an illegal online gambling ring in Phnom Penh were sent to Prey Sar prison on Saturday after appearing at the municipal court a day earlier, officials said Sunday.

“Fifteen North Korean men were sent to Prey Sar prison yesterday,” said prison director Srun Leang.

Mr. Leang declined to comment when asked if the men had been charged with a crime.

National Police spokesman Kirth Chantharith said Sunday that the men were sent to court on Friday, but declined to provide further details.

“This group was sent to the court Friday evening and the court decided to detain the suspects,” he said.

On Thursday, the 15 men were arrested in Phnom Penh’s Tuol Kok district after a weeklong investigation discovered the group’s gambling operation in a villa there.

In a similar case last year, nine South Koreans and four Cambodians were arrested for participating in an online gambling ring that used a video linkup to connect with players overseas.
