No Arrests Made in Child Rape, Slaying Cases

An 11-year-old girl was raped and killed in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district Saturday, and a 14-year-old girl was raped, choked and left for dead in Battambang province Friday, police said.

No arrests have been made yet in either case, according to police.

Villagers found the decomposing body of Run Sreida, 11, naked but for a white T-shirt, on the bank of the Bassac River in Doeum Sleng village Saturday, according to a police report.

The girl’s mother said she had disappeared Feb 27, according to the report, obtained Tuesday.

“We are investigating the case,” said a Meanchey district penal police officer, who declined to give his name.

In the second child rape in less than a week, a girl, 14, was attacked while picking wild leaves near Pa’cheav village in Battambang’s Ratanak Mondol district.

“The victim went into the forest near her village to pick wild leaves. Then she was caught by an unknown man,” Adhoc human rights investigator Krouch Chan Peou said.

The man repeatedly punched the girl in the stomach and strangled her with a scarf until she lost consciousness, Krouch Chan Peou said. The man then raped her and left her, he added.

The girl eventually regained consciousness and was able to make her way home, he said.

“The victim’s family brought her to Battambang hospital for treatment, and she is better,” Krouch Chan Peou said.

Ratanak Mondol district police chief Khum Soy said he could not comment on the case because an investigation is ongoing.
