A committee of human rights agencies is calling on the government to shore up its immigration laws in the wake of escalating violence toward foreigners.
The Cambodian Human Rights Action Committee, an umbrella organization of 16 human rights NGOs, issued a statement May 11 calling on the government to enforce its immigration policies and to pay closer attention to foreign legal residents.
“We have seen proper implementation of the law on only a small number of foreigners,” the statement reads.
The call comes after escalating violence, including the deaths of three fishing officials at the hands of a Vietnamese mob.
Ministry of Interior spokesman Khieu Sopheak said the government is working toward strengthening enforcement.
