New Border Office OK’d

The Thai government will allow Cambodia to open a consulate office in Thai Sa Kaew border province, a Thai embassy official said Wednesday.

Cambodia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry submitted their proposal to put a consulate-general in the province that borders Banteay Meanchey province, said Natapol Khantahiran, first secretary at the Thai embassy. The office would not be put in Aranyaprathet, the closest district to the bordertown Poipet. It will be in Muang district, the center of the province, closer to heads of government, Natapol said.

The reason for the office was because there are many Cambodians near the Thai border where “commercial activities flourish.” In a recipricol arrangement, Thailand will be able to open an office in Battambang town.

“We have the approval already in principal,” Natapol said. “We don’t know yet when.”

He , but said budget constraints should not be a problem opening it. “They should be able to do it,” he said. Multiple Foreign Affairs Ministry officials were unaware of the consulate project, referring calls to undersecretary of state Long Visalo, who is in Bangkok this week.

Natapol did not know when the office would open.
