NEC Calls for Council Election Candidates

The National Election Committee (NEC) on Tuesday called on political parties to send in lists of proposed candidates who wish to be considered in the upcoming municipal, provincial, city and district council elections, which are scheduled for May 18.

NEC President Im Suosdey said at a press conference that parties should hurry to get their lists in before the five-day registration period ends March 3.

“I would like to appeal to all political parties that want to register candidates, to please be quick,” he said, adding the ruling CPP and royalist Funcinpec parties had already prepared their lists.

“As I read the newspapers, I see that the CNRP has also prepared its candidates to join the election,” he added.

Candidates will officially be registered between February 27 and March 3, according to the NEC.

“We are preparing the list of candidates, but we’re not sure how many yet. This election is just parties voting for parties to make them look good—it’s a show,” said CNRP spokesman Yim Sovann.

With Kompong Cham province ordered split and Tbong Khmum province created, spawning new districts, there will be 3,324 positions up for grabs in May.
