The National Bank of Cambodia on Wednesday announced a redesign for the 100 and 500 riel notes, which will feature portraits of former King Norodom Sihanouk and King Norodom Sihamoni, respectively.
A sketch of the new Neak Loeung bridge, which links Kandal and Prey Veng provinces has also been added to the 500 riel note, which already features an image of the Japanese-funded Kizona Bridge in Kompong Cham province, Prime Minister Hun Sen said Wednesday.
The prime minister said the redesign was intended to honor Japan, which funded the new bridge.
“To show the ties of friendship and cooperation between Cambodia and Japan, the government has decided to put this 500 riel note into circulation,” he said. “This note can be spent starting today.”
