Mu Sochua, a lawmaker-elect for the opposition CNRP, announced Thursday that she will on Sunday morning resume her campaign to enter Phnom Penh’s Freedom Park.
Last month, Ms. Sochua appeared at the park alone for four straight days—each day being physically barred by authorities—in an effort to challenge the government’s arbitrary ban on public gatherings.
She said she will try to enter the park at 8 a.m. on both Sunday and Monday sporting politically-themed shirts in support of a stay-at-home strike begun by eight of the nation’s garment factory unions Thursday.
“On Sunday, I will wear the $160 minimum wage T-shirt, and on Monday I will wear a T-shirt of the…killing of the workers,” Ms. Sochua said.
On January 3, military police shot dead five protesters and injured more than 40 others taking part in a nationwide strike of garment workers calling for a monthly wage of $160.
“We cannot allow the demands to be lost because of the crackdown,” Ms. Sochua said. “We need to take these demands back to the companies.”
