More Protests At Shoe Plant

Trouble flared up again Wednesday at the New Star Shoe factory in Sihanoukville, where workers protested mandatory overtime.

Those same workers went on strike Dec 24, but agreed to return to work when the Taiwanese ownership promised to make overtime voluntary. But some workers said they were ordered to work overtime on Wednesday and were told they would be fired if they didn’t comply.

About 100 of the factory‘s 1,700 workers demonstrated outside the plant Wednesday, said Tak Vantha, Sihanoukville deputy police chief.

Chhun Sirun, first deputy governor for Sihanoukville, said the dispute was “90 percent solved” by Wednesday afternoon. But there were other personnel disputes at the factory besides overtime, he said.

Workers at another Sihanoukville shoe factory, Great You Xin, also struck briefly late last month in a mandatory overtime dispute.

. They have since returned to work.
