Ministry Seeks Chinese Help for More Job Centers

Labor Minister Ith Sam Heng has requested assistance from the Chinese government to build 18 new job centers throughout the country to better serve the unemployed, ministry spokesman Heng Suor said Tuesday.

Mr. Sam Heng made the request on Monday during a meeting with Xin Changxing, China’s vice minister of human resources and social security Mr. Suor said.

There are currently only seven job centers in the country, in Phnom Penh and the provinces of Siem Reap, Battambang, Kompong Cham, Takeo, Svay Rieng and Kampot.

The 18 new centers will be in the remaining provinces, Mr. Suor added.

“The labor centers are established to serve people who want to find out about labor opportunities,” Mr. Suor said.

Am Sam Ath, technical supervisor at rights group Licadho, welcomed the announcement of more job centers, but said the ability for rural populations to access information at the centers would be crucial.
