Minister Urges Health Officials to Report Clinics

Health Minister Mam Bunheng on Tuesday urged health departments in Phnom Penh and the provinces to file complaints with the courts if they discover that people running health services are breaking the law, a ministry official said.

Sok Srun, director of the Health Ministry’s hospital services department, said Mr. Bunheng instructed health departments to report illegal services during a meeting in Phnom Penh.

“[The minister] ordered the complete shutting down of any health services that are illegal,” he said.

“The Phnom Penh Health Authority has prepared six complaints to file to the court,” Mr. Srun added, though he declined to provide details.

Or Vanthen, who heads the health department in Kompong Speu province and attended the meeting, said he supported Mr. Bunheng’s initiative.

Since the revelation in December of an HIV outbreak in Battambang province’s Roka commune blamed on an unlicensed doctor, he said his province has shut down 18 health centers and stoppemore than 300 unlicensed doctors.
